Chapter 47

"My background"

I was brought up in a middle class family, which actually had its roots in the Aristocracy. My father was a Wing Commander in the RAF, a spitfire pilot during the 2nd World War who was decorated by the queen and received an O.B.E medal of honour for his invention of the very first Flight Simulator, which enabled pilots to train on the ground for the first time using electronics just after the 2nd World War. Because he was in the military at the time of his amazing invention, the military took all of the credit. If he had been a civilian at the time of his invention he would have been a billionaire for sure, as his invention is used by all countries today. His two brothers were killed in action during the 2nd world war. As a result of all this, he became an atheist.

My mother took care of our large family of 6 brothers and sisters. As my father was in the military, as a pilot, we lived abroad in several places when I was young, including Cyprus and Aden in Greece.

After being to boarding schools, and studying for some years at University, while living in Northern England, I decided to travel around with the aim to do something different and to meet other young people, which was common in those days (1971).

I then travelled over to Scandinavia during my university vacations. I hitchhiked all around Scandinavia. I was invited to stay with different very friendly Norwegian families. I worked my way as a job chain-saw cutting down trees, and travelled some.

While being in Norway, and working there sawing down trees, I fell in love with the beautiful nature, including one of the many beautiful women there.

(Later I ended up marrying one of them)

I finally left university in the UK to go and see this beautiful girl in Norway. However it was not to be, and instead I had my heart broken. I then started studying at another university in Oslo. Well it sounds humorous today, but back then I felt very frustrated, as I had just lost my job and now my girlfriend. So on the day she said goodbye, I decided to turn to alcohol for relief, and while taking a train home to my apartment, I started to review my life so far, until that time, (19 years old), and decided that life itself was just too confusing, and almost pointless. Before moving to Norway I had had another very big setback. My family had been very involved in serving in the military. My father had been a decorated spitfire pilot Wing Commander in the Second World War, and later on a jet pilot. My uncles had served in the military as officers and both were killed in action. My dream when I was 18 was to also become a fighter pilot. Well I managed to pass all of the academic exams to become a pilot in the military down at Biggin Hill in England, but then strangely the doctors found something unusual about my heart.

This condition has not at all hindered me while on the ground, but apparently it would have caused a “black-out” for me while flying at high altitudes in a fighter plane. I know now that God intervened, so that I would not become a pilot, as He had other plans, and wanted me to become a missionary. So after having quit university, my life seemingly having fallen apart, everything else seemed in vain. I got into a very bad mood, which is not normal for me, and for some strange reason, I decided it was time to jump off the train! I know it sounds very funny, and even totally unimaginably silly today! However at that time, I thought well I am an atheist, but before I do anything stupid, I had better challenge God to do something, if He was there at all. So I called out and said, “If there is a God up there, then show yourself right now, or I am going to throw myself on the train tracks”.

I was dead serious.(Please excuse the pun)

What happened next was truly remarkable!

I suddenly “out of the blue” felt a strong comforting and reassuring feeling about me, and I heard a distinct voice speaking in my head saying, “You’re not really going to throw yourself off of the train are you?” I retorted, well of course not! I asked who was speaking to me, and the voice told me it was Jesus, who was speaking to me. I asked him what I was supposed to do with my life, as I found life so confusing, and very difficult to understand how to live my life. I told Him that Love was very complicated! He told me to get myself a Bible and to start studying the New Testament.

He also told me that he had entered my soul when I had desperately called out to Him, and that I had gotten “born again” and that was why I could feel the reassurance of His loving and comforting spirit about me. (John 15.26) In fact so strong was this very comforting reassurance, that I had suddenly totally lost my severe depression and sadness. Instead I was totally both happy and felt free in spirit. (2 Corinthians 5.17) As if I had been a chained eagle before, that had now been totally set free. It was so wonderful. I could fly in spirit! At that moment I knew that God and Jesus and His Holy Spirit were in fact real. That was such a wonderful realization and experience of Salvation. I suppose you could say that it was similar to a small child who has gotten hurt by falling over and skinning his knee.

He runs home to his mother who picks him up and comforts him. She gives him so much un-conditional love. So much so, that amazingly, he totally forgets about the pain.

So was it for me! The voice said to me, “Ok she has left you, but are there not many other fish in the sea?” I answered, Yes, of course, you are completely right, and I stopped being sad about my former girlfriend from that moment onwards. I went back to my apartment and eventually started studying the Bible. I came upon this beautiful verse in Revelations Chapter 3 verse 20. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock, if any man hear My voice and open the door, I will come into him and sup with him and he with Me. When I read that verse for the very first time, it dawned on me that that must have been what happened to me on the train. I had actually gotten Saved.

While I was on the train, the voice also told me that God wanted me to spend my whole life telling others about Jesus, and that he is real! To tell others that anyone can get saved if they just get desperate enough, to want to know the truth. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, and no man cometh unto the Father but by Me.” (John 14.6)

I have spent the 40 (now on 03/01/2022, it is getting close to 50 years) odd years since then, witnessing to people in different countries, from many different backgrounds. I don’t say to people “Come to church”, but, come to Jesus, as He will take care of you. All you need to do is to receive Him into your heart, ask him to forgive your sins, and He will readily give you Eternal life no matter who you are. If Jesus could save me, who was a lost atheist, He can also save you! (2 Corinthians 5.17)

Eternal Life does not depend on how good you are, but just on Jesus, and His wonderful sacrifice on the cross for all of humanity. It is important to realize that we are all sinners in need of a Saviour. (Romans 3.23) Getting saved is permanent. Once in Forever in! John 3.36. He who believes on the Son, has everlasting life. (Ephesians 2.8-9)

As my testimony clearly proves, you do not have to go to church to get saved.

Salvation is freely available for all. There is no Jew or Gentile, or any other race discrimination when it comes to getting saved. All are one in Christ Jesus.

Since Jesus came to me personally, when I was practically an atheist before, and took the time to get me saved, I have come to realize that God does not want to put people into a religious box of some kind. He wants everyone to know Him personally through prayer and through diligently studying His Word the bible. He wants us to show His love to others everywhere, especially by offering them hope of the same personal Salvation that we have been granted by his grace.

Of course I do think it advisable to seek out fellowship with other like-minded Christians, especially to strengthen your Faith whilst still a new Christian. “Neglect not the assembling together of yourselves together as the manner of some is”. However sometimes it is not possible to congregate with other Christians in large numbers, and that is when the verse “where two or three are gathered together in My name there am I in the midst of you” verse comes in very useful. (Matthew 18.20)

It really is wonderful to know Jesus and that He keeps us safe from all real Harm. He does not necessarily take away all of our problems, but He does carry us through them. No matter what they are. He surrounds us with His Angels and encourages us and comforts us through His Word. I really think it essential to be a good scribe of God’s Word. (2 Timothy 2.15: “Study to show yourself approved unto men, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.”)

The Joy of being a real “Born again Christian” is in being truly close to Jesus and His Holy Spirit as well as telling others, about how very wonderful He is. He is real, and can live in our hearts and desires to live in your heart also. It is really so simple to get saved. Just reach out and tell Him that you really want Him to come into your life right now. Ask Him to forgive all of your sins, and give you eternal life. It is also wise to ask Him to fill you with His Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit will help you to love others and to read God’s Word; and will also be great Comforter to you during your life. (John 14.26)

When I was a brand new Christian, living by myself in my apartment, as I studied the bible I started to grow spiritually. I became concerned about others and wanted to tell others about Jesus.

Then it was that I met the worst drug addict in our town. In fact he was a drug-pusher.

I witnessed to him and asked him to pray and ask Jesus to both save him and to deliver him from drug addiction. He did. He got saved. As a result he was a tremendous witness to those with whom he was associated. That made me very happy to see his life change so drastically.

One morning, I was smoking a cigarette, (I didn’t know any better in those days), when clear as a bell I heard Jesus’ voice saying in my heart “You put more trust in that cigarette, than you do in Me.”

I was shocked. “What do you mean Lord, I asked?” he answered me, “Well, every time you have a problem, or are lonely, or stressed, you immediately pull out a cigarette, instead of coming to Me. Come to Me and I will help you with every detail of your life”

Up until then I had been smoking 25 cigarettes/day. After Jesus spoke to me clearly about this matter, amazingly I was able to quit smoking that very same day, without any withdrawal symptoms, which was a real miracle! Jesus really is so wonderful if we pray, and ask Him to take over completely in our lives. He loves to help us and especially loves our communications with Him, where we make a big effort to include Him in everything we do. Then our life becomes so much fuller. Scripture tell us that all of the SAVED are  part of the Bride of Christ. That is a very intimate relationship, being so close to Christ. He really does love each one of us very much, and we just need to ask him to draw us ever closer to Him. There is absolutely nothing that He can’t do.

“For with Me Nothing shall be impossible”- (Gospel of Luke 1.17)

I distinctly remember another morning, I woke up speaking in tongues, and I didn’t know what on earth I was saying. A Christian friend explained to me later about the “Gifts of the spirit” as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12.10 & Romans 12.6. On another occasion I heard the Lord clearly saying to me, “Ask Me for anything you desire, and I will perform it!” I thought for a few minutes, and decided that I had lost my beautiful girlfriend, and that I would very much like to have a new beautiful girlfriend. I was living in a very small room, and wanted to have a bigger apartment. I also asked to have a lot more money. I was a pianist and so I asked for Jesus to help me to find a rock band to join. I also liked young people so I asked for a job working with the youth. I was 19 at the time.

Stunningly within one year, Jesus had supplied everything that I had asked for, including I became the leader of a Youth Club, of 150 teenagers. I also ran a disco at a nightclub. I was invited to play in a rock group. I was still studying at university as well. I then inherited some money.

God also gave me a beautiful new girlfriend who became my fiancée.

All happened within one year and I knew it all  had to be a miracle!

However that was but the beginning of the story....

One morning I woke up sad and crying, because it suddenly dawned on me how selfish I had been.

I had been asking for things only for me!

So I said to Jesus, “You have supplied all that I asked for just one year ago, but what do you want from me? In other words what can I do to make you happy and not just me?

Wow! I soon found out that God had completely other plans for my life, than me just living for myself and money, and simply doing any old job that I fancied.

One night soon thereafter, I had a dream that my apartment was just like a doll’s house. That is the old-fashioned type, with the front wall of the house hinged onto the front of the house. All of a sudden all of my records and stereo and possessions flew out of the doll’s house, as the sides of the doll’s house with windows in it opened outwards.”

To cut a very long story short, I have been a missionary, volunteer and teacher for the past 40 years, since the above personal testimony and have worked in many countries.

I, together with my wife and family, have tried to help others to the best of our ability. We have been involved in prison ministries, helping children in need, and most recently helping the Philippine disaster, and now the Ukraine. There is always a need somewhere. It is just a matter of looking around, and getting to work to help others, in whatever way each of us can, as Jesus himself told us.

“Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all of thy heart, soul and mind; & love your neighbour as yourself.” (Matthew 22.37-40)

Finally, I challenge you, that if you have not already prayed to receive Jesus into your heart, so that you can have eternal life, then please do so immediately, to keep you safe from what is soon coming upon the earth!

Jesus stated in Revelations 3.20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock, if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him and live with him and him with me”.

“He who believes on the Son of God hath eternal life.” John 3.36. That means right now!

Once saved, you are eternally saved, and here is a very simple prayer to help you to get saved:-

Dear Jesus,

Please come into my heart, forgive me all of my sins, and give me eternal life, and fill me with your Holy Spirit”

Once you’ve prayed that little prayer sincerely, then you are guaranteed a wonderful future in Heaven for eternity with your creator, and loved ones. God is Love (1 John 4.16)

As I mentioned earlier in this book, your Salvation does not depend on you going to church, and your good works. Titus 3.5 states “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy he saved us”.

Your salvation only depends on receiving Christ as your saviour, not on church or religion!

(If I could get saved having been an atheist and an evolutionist whilst at university, then anyone can get saved! Just challenge God to prove He exists, & ask Him into your heart! He will show up in your life & teach you the truth!) (John 14.6)
